Located in the basement of the ‘old’ Holiday Inn Hotel. The Europa 1 & 2 was opened by Europa Entertainment Centres Ltd. on 25th January 1974. Screen 1 with 210-seats opened with Ingmar Bergman’s “Cries and Whispers” starring Harriett Andersson and Screen 2 with 208-seats opened with James Taylor in “Two-Lane Blacktop” & Lynn Carlin in “Taking Off”. Screen 2 quickly became a members only cinema club, screening uncensored adult films which screen 1 played regular films.
The Europa 1 & 2 was closed on 30th April 1987 when Holiday Inn Hotel terminated the lease as they wanted the space for a conference centre. The ‘old’ Holiday Inn Hotel has since been demolished and a new Holiday Inn Hotel has been built and opened in a new location on Bond Street.
