Tatler Continental Cinema

Located in Bristol City Centre on Carey’s Lane off Old Market Street. Originally built as a roller skating rink, it was converted into the 870-seat Olympia Theatre in 1910, screening silent films.

Taken over by the Jacey Cinemas chain in 1947, it was modernised and re-opened on 16th December 1947 as the Tatler Cinema, with a seating capacity reduced to 560. The cinema also had a café for the convenience of its patrons.

In 1948, it began screening International films with English sub-titles, and was re-named Tatler Continental Cinema. As years went by, the programming went from art films to sex films. The Tatler Continental Cinema was closed in 1963 with the nudist film "My Bare Lady" starring Julie Martin.

The cinema was purchased by the council, to demolish, and build the new inner-city ring-road and underpass on Old Market Street, today the Old Market Roundabout.
