The August 1, 1953 issue of Boxoffice reported, “Ernest Davis and Baker Newton have announced that the opening date for their new drive-in theatre located near Vidalia, LA tentatively has been set for August 1. The ozoner will have space for approximately 500 cars and inside seating room for about 40 persons”. It opened on August 7, 1953 with James Stewart in “The Naked Spur” & June Allyson in “Too Young to Kiss”.
The 1956 Motion Picture Almanac listed “Davis & Newton” as the owners of the Rio Drive-In in Vidalia. The Rio Drive-In had a capacity of 400 cars and 200 seats. It was still open in 1965, but had closed by 1966.
