Fox Theatres was founded in 1957 by Richard Fox in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. On May 28, 1971, the company launched two twin-screen theatres first with the Fox East Theatre in the Reading Mall. It was followed closely by the first new downtown movie theatre in years, the Fox Midtown Twin Theatre also launching in 1971.
The downtown location would close and was retrofitted for other retail purposes. The building was a Family Dollar Store in 2019. The Fox Midtown Twin Theatre proved to be much less than successful than its mall counterpart. The Fox East Theatre stayed in business expanding to four screen and didn’t close until September of 2019.
