The Bond Theatre opened in 1939 in what was formerly the Oddfellows Hall (itself replacing a turn-of-the-20th-century retail store in the same building). It was originally part of the Frisina Amusements chain. The Bond Theatre featured a large vertical sign and a triangular marquee, both illuminated by neon lighting.

By the late-1970’s, the theatre was in need of remodeling, especially the tall vertical sign, which was in danger of collapsing. However, instead of remodeling the theatre, Frisina opted to shutter it.

An antique mall operated in its lobby for some time before it was completely rebuilt and reopened as a triplex showing first-run movies. It was ‘temporary’ closed at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in early-2021.

A little clarification regarding the theater-to-antique-mall-to-theater conversion:

The antique mall actually took up the entire first floor—lobby, auditorium, and all. The Globe project was a very invasive gut rehab, and ironically the interior looked more like a golden-age movie theater when it was an antique mall than it does now! The Globe is a completely modern triplex, complete with a new elevator and a coffee shop upstairs. The Globe may well have only a third of the seating total in its three smallish rooms as the Bond did as a single-screener, but it’s like comparing apples and oranges.

The Globe Theatre’s website has not been updated in quite a while. There have been no social media posts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) in years either. Here is their last Facebook post from March 14, 2020:

“Globe Theatre closes doors to mitigate COVID- 19 spread Effective immediately, the Globe Theatre will stop exhibiting movies until further notice. In order to protect our patrons and employees the Globe Theatre projectors will go dark. All movie show times will be cancelled beginning Monday, March 16, 2020. We are very sorry for this inconvenience. We are one of very few local entertainment options. The decision to close has been difficult but we feel that community and employee health concerns are more important. It is critical that we all do our part to slow the spread of COVID-19 virus.

Movie theatre seating and public areas do not meet the CDC guidelines for social and physical distancing. Other theatres remaining open are encouraging public gatherings which put all of us at risk for spreading this disease more rapidly. The Globe wants to do its part to “flatten the curve”.

The timing of reopening will be determined by future circumstances. Any private parties currently booked at the Globe will be contacted for rebooking. All questions should be directed to Dave Willey via email, , or by telephone at (618) 267-1643.”
