Mertzon Drive-In

The Mertzon Drive-In appears to have opened on June 4, 1946 with Charles Coburn in “Shady Lady”. It was still open in 1957 operated by Sam Covey. It was closed in 1961, but reopened in 1966. It was later closed and has since been demolished.

It appears that the projection booth is still standing.

Error/Update: O.M. Kirkeby opened the brand new Mertzon Drive-In Theatre on June 4, 1946 with “Shady Lady.”

A closer address is 504 S. Broadway Street, Mertzon, TX.

Google Maps has updated their addresses and this puts it right on the projection booth.

The screen appears to be demolished in a 1971 aerial. The drive-in was seemingly built incorporating the natural ridges of the hill, making it rather unique.

Today, only the projection booth remains which appears to have been built from the rocks on the property, but that is a guess.

O.M. Kireby used the hill for the parking and had the screen down below. Definitely unique, indeed.
