Angelo Drive-In -- Formal Grand Opening Week

Rick Smith a newspaper columnist for the San Angelo Standard-Times wrote in 2009 that the Angelo Twin Drive-In was built in 1969 as the city’s first twin-screen drive-in. A Historic Aerials photo places it near the modern-day equivalent of 4321 Sherwood Way. It opened on August 14, 1969 with Gregory Peck in “McKenna’s Gold” & Dean Martin 9n “The Wrecking Crew” on the South Screen and Michael Sarrazin in “Eye of the Cat” & Anthony Perkins in “Psycho” on the North Screen.

The Angelo Twin Drive-In’s first appearance in the Motion Picture Almanac series was 1977, which shows just how bad the MPA was about updating its drive-in lists in the early-1970’s. At the time, the drive-in was owned by the United Artists Theatre Circuit, Rowley United Division. The Angelo Twin Drive-In stayed on the MPA list through 1988, the MPA’s final drive-in list. The MPA never mentioned the Angelo’s capacity, so my estimate of 600 is based on the aerial photo. By the 1996 aerial, it was gone.

A closer address is 4321 Sherwood Way, San Angelo, TX.

This puts it right on the original entrance road, parts of which can still be seen just on the west side of the Tractor Supply Co.

The drive-in was operational in a 1972 aerial, but by 1984 it had been demolished and stores appear on much of the property. It’s pretty clear that the drive-in had been demolished at least a year before given the completion of the stores, although some of the property was still under development.

So, it did not make it much past a decade, if that.

Today, most of the property is occupied by retail stores. However, you can still see much of the ramps for the south screen.
