Bridge Theatre

The Bridge Theatre was opened March 14, 1930 to replace the old Bridge Theatre and the Edmondson Theatre, according to “Exit”, Dr. Robert Headley’s book on Baltimore theatres. The two smaller theatres had been built next to each other in that block and were torn down for the building of the new Bridge Theatre.

The massive theatre building had an entrance on the corner of Edmondson Avenue and Pulaski Street, but that has been closed off and a new entrance has been made on Edmondosn Avenue. The Bridge Theatre closed in 1968 and has been used as a church since November 1970. It appears to be in good condition, and while the neighborhood around it has seen better days, the old theatre building appears it will be around for many years to come.

The Bridge was designed by John Zink and had one of the nices art deco auditoriums in the state. Sadly it has been effectively destroyed and only a few photos are left to attest to its beauty.

Lost Memory, I am new to the post. I wish to express to you my wholehearted gratitude for sharing not only this vintage color photo of the Bridge Theater, but also the early scene of street cars, and thriving businesses etc. which brought back many memories. Among my most memorable films seen at the Bridge Theater were: “Invasion Of The Body Snatchers” (1956 version), “On The Threshold Of Space”, “The Hard Man”, etc.
