The Savoy Cinema was a conversion of a woollen and drapery store and was designed by W.J. Doherty. It opened on 31st July 1932 and had 880 seats in the stalls and a further 160 in the balcony. It was fitted with an RCA sound system and the roof was of corrugated iron. It obviously closed at some point in the 1970’s as it was reopened in the summer of 1979 with a screening of the film “Alien”. It closed again in the late-1980’s. Plans to redevelop the site were unveiled in 2004 but have yet to amount to anything. The Sligo Tidy Towns campaign repainted the frontage in 2015 to look like a cinema.

Further information indicates a nightclub proposed in 1986, Fianna Fail party offices in 1987 and a furniture shop 1994.
Kine Weekly states the Savoy opened 31 July 1932.
