Haley’s Opera House was opened in 1910 and closed in 1915..The Gem Theatre was opened in 1916. By 1933 it had been renamed Melba Theatre. In April 1932 it became the Legion Theatre. It seated 403. Located in a popular place for Meramec River float trippers. The theatre maintained a small town atmosphere and most of its business was done on the week ends. It mostly ran a double bill program. It was closed on February 28, 1949 with Jeanne Crain in “Apartment for Peggy”.
A new Legion Theatre was opened om March 4, 1949 with George Montgomery in “Belle Starr’s Daughter” & The Three Stooges in “Fiddler’s Three”. The New Legion Theatre wasn’t anything spectacular as far as design but was one of the only forms of entertainment in the small town. The theatre closed on November 12, 1962 with Susan Hayward in “Back Street”. The theatre building itself is still standing and operating as cafe.

Address: 112 Main St.reet, Steelville, Mo 65565. This theatre goes back to the 1920’s when it was called the Gem Theatre, by 1933 it was known as the Melba Theatre and finally the Legion Theatre in 1937. Should have aka’s of Gem Theatre & Melba Theatre.
Lawrence L. Pruitt opened the New Legion Theatre on March 4, 1949 with “Belle Star’s Daughter” supported by the Three Stooges short “Three Fiddlers” and cartoon. The previous location of the Legion Theatre closed on February 28, 1949 with “Apartment for Peggy.” Jerry Martin closed thea theatre on November 12, 1962 with Susan Hayward in “Back Street” ending the venue’s run.
