When I was growing up in Harrisburg in the 1940s and 50s the Hershey was a regular movie theater. But it alternated films with live performances. I saw road company productions of the Broadway shows PLAIN AND FANCY and THE PAJAMA GAME there, my first experience of real musical theater. The only film I specifically recall seeing (though my parents and I often went there) was an odd one, FABIOLA, an Italian film about ancient Rome which got a limited release in the U.S.Later I went to their screenings of classic films but I remember it was difficult for them to keep the CinemaScope films in focus which was really irritating.

With the retirement of long time manager and Classic Film Series supporter Diane Paul last year, the Hershey Theatre is no longer screening films.
The Classic Film Series was only once a month as a fill in on those weekends when other events not scheduled and the usage and partronage was not enough to warrant the investment in a digital projector.
I attended Milton Hershey School from ‘63 to '69, and we went to church services in the theater Sunday morning, after watching movies Saturday night. Go figure. I’ll never forget the organ rising out of the pit, reminded me of the Phantom of the Opera.

Susan Robinson was named in 1985 to be the Executive Manager of the Hershey and hopes to improve on the “CLASSIC FILM SERIES” started in 1979.

Patsy – The Hershey Theatre is magnificent. Yes it is an atmospheric theatre. Check their website. I know there are some stage shows coming. I, myself, want to get tickets to see “Avenue Q” when it plays there in February. However, individual show tickets have not gone on sale yet. I stand in the lobby everytime my wife and I go there and am just awed by the splendor. Only someone on the economic scale of Milton Hershey could have built a place like this. The auditorium is equally as gorgeous. I look forward to perhaps some Saturday getting there to see a movie. I believe it is one Saturday a month over the Fall and Winter and early Spring they show a classic movie. Don’t miss a chance to see this theatre!!!!!

Well, it looks like this gal will be making a trip to Hershey in October and will get to see the Hershey Theatre, in person! After looking photos I tend to believe that this theatre is atmospheric though it isn’t described as such.
WOW, what a beautiful theatre..one that only the name HERSHEY could build…a must-see for any CT member!

Reading about this beautiful theatre that is connected with the name Milton Hershey is truly a gem for ‘chocolate town’ so I hope to see it, in person, someday along with the Carlisle Theatre which is in the same PA area.
Winston: I hope that you were able to obtain tickets to see Mamma Mia at the Hershey Theatre as I recently saw the show at the Shea’s in Buffalo! And I hope to see Jersey Boys at the Shea’s when it comes to town!
