Old Orchard 3

Opened December 10, 1971 for Suburban Detroit Theaters as twin, the Old Orchard I & II, each of the auditoriums could seat 650. The theatre opened with “Scrooge” and a reissue of “Doctor Zhivago”.

The Old Orchard was copied a year later in the Parkway I & II, in Mount Clemens (which was closed in the 1980’s, and later gutted for retail use).

During the late-1970’s, a third auditorium was tacked on to the Old Orchard (renamed the Old Orchard 1,2,3), bringing total seating to over 1,600.

During the 1980’s, the theatre was sold to the AMC chain, which operated it until the late-1990’s as the AMC Old Orchard 3. After closing as a movie theatre, it briefly housed a church before being acquired by the Holocaust Memorial Center in 2001, which was looking for a larger location than its home in West Bloomfield. The former theatre was almost entirely demolished and rebuilt, becoming the Holocaust Memorial Center at the end of August 2003.

The Holocaust Memorial Center includes museum space, classrooms, a library and offices.
