Normanton Grand in January 2004

Located in Normanton, West Yorkshire. The Grand Picture House was operating by 1934. It had a 20 feet wide proscenium and was equipped with a British Thomson Houston(BTH) sound system.

By 1944 it had been renamed Grand Cinema and was operated by J & M. Segelman of Leeds from around 1937 to the early-1950’s. The Leeds based Star Cinemas chain took over by 1953, and they were still operating the Grand Cinema in 1958. It had closed by 1962.

By January 2004 it was in use as Harrison’s Retail Outlet. By 2020 it was a children’s play centre.

During the 1940’s and 50’s it was the place to see Tarzan and Flash Gordon serials. The films on show were always very old and not the standard that most other cinemas would show. Invariably the were old RKO productions
