Located in the South Kensington district of southwest inner-city London. The Imperial Institute was opened by Queen Victoria on 10th May 1893 and was designed in a fine Gothic style by architect T.E. Colcutt. It was a museum and exhibition centre, dedicated to the British Empire.
In the late-1920’s one of the galleries in the museum was converted into the Imperial Institute Cinema, to the plans of architectural firm Easton & Robertson. All seating was provided on a single floor. Films screened would be of a documentary/educational type about the British Empire. The cinema operated into the 1930’s, possibly still open after World War II?
In the 1950’s parts of the building were demolished for the expansion of Imperial College. The Imperial Institute was re-named Commonwealth Institute in 1958 and was moved to a new building in Holland Park off Kensington High Street in 1962.
