In Antrim, County Antrim, the 1931 Kine Year Book lists a Picture House, with no further details. In the 1934 K.Y.B. the Picture House is listed as being operated by the Rev. T. McCotter. Whether this is the Cinema which is listed in the 1937 K.Y.B and beyond is not known, but they record a proscenium width of 20ft, and in 1953 that it was operated by Antrim Cinema Ltd. The Cinema closed on 23rd July 1977.
The building was demolished when the whole area was subject to major redevelopment. This was supposed to include a “cultural and entertainment centre”, which would have included a cinema and a dance hall, but that was left up to private enterprise and John Shiels, who leased the Cinema, and received no compensation from its closure, said he was not in any position to invest in a new cinema. Presumably no one else was either, as Antrim had to wait until December 1994, when the 4-screen Cineplex opened on an adjoining site.
