New City Cinema 6

Opened as the single screen Town Theatre on April 8, 1966 with “The Ugly Dachsound” & Walt Disney’s “Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree”. Located in the corner of the ‘L’ in the L shaped Clarkstown Plaza strip mall. Split into 2 screens on July 3, 1981. Owned by Brandt Theaters until the late-1980’s. On February 15, 1991 it became the New City Cinema 6.

Around 1995 the owner was Nelson-Ferman Theatres. In 1998 it was taken over by Clearview Cinemas and became New City Cinemas. In June 2013 Bow-Tie Cinemas took over when they took most Clearview locations. On November 1, 2013 it was renamed Bow Tie Cinemas Fine Arts, and changed from screening first run movies to independent and foreign movies. Around 2017 Bow-Tie let the lease go and it was taken over by Main Street Cinemas. That venture was short lived and it then became New City Cinema 6 once again, and survived the pandemic! It was closed in early-August 2022.

On November 1, 2013 this theatre will be re-named The BowTie Fine Arts Theatre and will become Rockland County’s theatre for art, independent and foreign films. This makes sense as, in addition to the nearby AMC Palisades Theatres, Regal Theatres is opening a new 12-plex in the Nanuet Mall. Nice alternative programming. Already been digitally converted.

I can’t figure how there was an annex of retail space. The theater is in the corner of the mall. Where did they take over space?

Sadly this little Multiplex closed near the beginning of August 2022. The landlord supposedly raised up the rent and the owners declined to pay the higher rental on the building. It’s now for lease and I believe all the movie equipment has been cleared out along with the seats and everything else. It was a nice inexpensive option to the two multiplexes in Rockland County. The regal cinema in Nanuet is possibly closing in January or February 2023. Leaving only AMC is the lone multiplex and the 98-year-old single screen Lafayette Theatre in Suffern New York as theaters in Rockland County
