Cinema de Luxe

Located in the West Sussex town of East Grinstead. Originally opened in 1875 as a Public Hall. It opened as the Cinema de Luxe around 1913. Seating was provided for 425 in stalls and a small balcony. It was closed by 1931 as a silent cinema.

It was eventually equipped with a Mihay sound system and reopened. It was refurbished in 1933 and re-named Solarius Cinema, with seating reduced to 390. There were sunburst decorative features above the proscenium and along the side-walls. A Western Electric sound system was installed.

The Solarius Cinema was closed in 1938 with Charles Boyer in “History is Made at Night”. The building remained empty, and was damaged by a fire in 1940. It was demolished in the 1950’s and a branch of Woolworths and offices for the East Grinstead Courier newspaper was built on the site.
