Located in the Battlefield district to the south of Glasgow city centre. The Mayfair Cinema was built and operated by an independent company. It was opened on 1st February 1934 with Madeleine Carroll in “I Was A Spy”.
It was taken over by the Associated British Cinemas(ABC) chain in September 1935.
ABC closed the Mayfair Cinema on 30th June 1973. It became a warehouse, and was demolished in 1980. A block of flats for the elderly named Hanover Close, was built on the site.

as relief projectionist i worked in the mayfair in 1972 so it must be after that it closed
How cood it have closed in 1963 when.we seen seen yellow submarine by the Beatles on a saturday afternoon in 1968,not unless all u need is love and the superb film track. was written pre 63,….victor eff.

I recall seeing Robert Vaughn in a film called ‘The Venetian Affair’ back in 1967 in The Mayfair, Sinclair Drive. It was memorable due to the name and the leading actor as I went to see it believing it was a ‘Man from U.N.C.L.E.’ film and so as previously stated the theatre couldn’t have closed in 1963.
The closing year has been corrected to 1973.
