Playhouse Cinema

Located on the corner of Mill Road and Covent Garden. The Playhouse Cinema was opened on 13th May 1913. Designed by architectural firm George Baines & Son, it had a decorative facade. Inside the auditorium, there was barrel ceiling, and seating was provided for 769 in the stalls and 167 in the small balcony.

Built & operated by the Cambridge Picture Playhouse Ltd., it was taken over by the Union Cinemas chain in 1927. They were taken over by the Associated British Cinemas(ABC) chain in October 1937.

ABC closed the Playhouse Cinema on 24th November 1956. The frontage of the building was eventually removed and it became a Fine Fare supermarket. Later a charity shop for the Salvation Army, known as Sally Anne’s.
