The Great Star has been continuing it’s live event presentations and will do so into the new year.
It will be hosting many of the events for the 20th anniversary of SF Sketchfest, including a live table read of Dana Gould’s interpretation of “Plan 9 from Outer Space”

The Great Star has reopened. From their website:

Sounds like from this linked article dated Jan 30, 2018 that the Great Star has closed.

We recently formed a non profit to keep this theater used for live performance and films. Thing are going well so far.

A campaign by the new managers to put the finishing touches in place after two years of just cleaning her up. Performances have happened since they took over and more are planned.
But where is the overview. If nothing else, because of it’s location, there must be quite a history.
The headers need to be changed for this theatre: Status: Open, Function: Live performances (Chinese)
Current Name: Great Star Theatre
I have a San Francisco Chronicle advert dated November 1976 for the Great Star screening “Oriental Playgirl”
The Great China opened around 1925 in the heart of San Francisco's
Chinatown; in the early 1960’s, its name was changed to Great Star.
Only Chinese films were ever shown there, it closed around 2000,
and is now vacant.
