News About This Theater
- Mar 17, 2010 — Great Star Theater in San Francisco's Chinatown to reopen
Opened on April 5, 1925 as the Great China Theatre, presenting Chinese Opera. During World War II it began screening Chinses movies. In the 1960’s it was renamed Great Star Theater. In the 1970’s Kung Fu movies were its main attraction.
In the 1990’s it was opened sporadically and was closed more than it was open and the theatre fell into a state of disrepair. New operators took over in 2010 and it was refurbished. It was still not a great success and other openings and closures under different operators took place in 2014 & 2015.
In 2020 it was refurbished again and reopened in 2021 presenting movies and Chinese Opera came back onto the stage. It now also presents circus, stand-up comedy and cabaret.

But where is the overview. If nothing else, because of it’s location, there must be quite a history.

Sounds like from this linked article dated Jan 30, 2018 that the Great Star has closed.
