Melba Theater (remains) ... Goldthwaite Texas

The Melba Theater was opened on June 28, 1929 with Monte Blue in “From Headquarters”. It closed briefly in 1937 to be given a Streamline Moderne style makeover. It finally closed on January 7, 1962 with Mickey Rooney in “Everything’s Ducky”.

As of April 2010 only an empty shell of a building remains standing as a reminder of the Melba Theater.

The Melba Theatre was mentioned in Boxoffice of August 21, 1937. The house was still in operation in 1951, when the last mention of it I can find in Boxoffice appeared in the issue of July 28.

Well this post was done along time ago but if this is Goldthwaite Tx, then I know it was going at least to 1960 cause I was in the 1st grade and the year book says… Sponsored by 84 Drive In and Melba. I guess Melba was the theater!

The Melba Theatre launched June 28, 1929 with “From Headquarters.” In 1937, it was closed briefly for a streamlined makeover. Mr. and Mrs. Philip Nickols bought the Melba in 1945 from Annie Coleman. They would launch the 84 Drive-In in Goldthwaite in 1952.

The Melba operated part-year with the Drive-In for almost 10 years. The Nickols closed the Melba on January 7, 1962 with the film, “Everything’s Ducky.” A classified ad offered items including its Star popcorn popper and the remainder of its theatre seats for sale. They would go on to operate the 84 Drive-In as the town’s sole theatre through the 1971 season.
