Located at the corner of The Broadway and Queen’s Road, adjacent to Wimbledon Railway & Tube Station, at the rear side of Wimbledon Town Hall. Both buildings were designed by the architectural firm Bradshaw Gass & Hope in a Neo-Classical style. It was faced in red brick and white Portland stone. The Wimbledon Town Hall and Town Hall Kinema were opened by HRH Prince George on 5th November 1931.
The Town Hall Kinema was equipped with a Compton 3Manual/12Ranks organ which was opened by organists Henry Coleman and Phillip Dore. The proscenium was 35 feet wide, the stage 35 feet deep and there were six dressing rooms. The hall was also used for concerts and civic functions.
The Wimbledon Town Hall and Town Hall Kinema were the headquarters of the Municipal Borough of Wimbledon. Town Hall Kinema stopped screening films in 1946, and went over to civic functions and special events. The Town Hall Kinema was demolished in the 1980’s. The Wimbledon Town Hall became surplus to requirements in 1985 when it had become the Borough of Merton and moved to new premises. Parts of the facade were retained, and a new shopping centre was built and opened in 1992, which includes the Centre Court Leisure Centre on the site of the Kinema. By 2025 the former Wimbledon Town Hall has been repurposed for a Tesco Express supermarket and a H&M clothing store.
