King's Palace Cinema

Located in the southwest London district of Wimbledon. Opened as the King’s Palace Theatre on 18th October 1910. It was designed by architect Augustus Stewart Hurst who was also the owner and operator. The cinema was located almost adjacent to the (then newly constructed) Wimbledon Theatre on The Broadway.

In September 1914, a new larger auditorium had been opened at the rear of the King’s Palace Theatre and the earlier auditorium then became the vestibule and lounge for the new King’s Palace Cinema. The cinema also had a a cafĂ© for the convenience of its patrons.

It continued under the ownership of the Hurst family but was leased to Lou Morris in 1922 and in 1927 it was taken over by J.F Emery Circuit, operators of the Elite Cinema. After a year it was taken over by the small Lou Morris circuit. By 1933 it was taken over by the London & Southern Super Cinemas Ltd. By January 1938 it was under the ownership of Gaywood Cinemas but was closed by 1941. It re-opened again from 1942 under new Independent operators and continued until final closure on 30th April 1955 with Ricardo Montalban in “My Man and I” and Robert Ryan in “The Set Up”.

The floor was levelled it it was converted in a roller skating rink. This was later closed and the building was demolished. In 2009, the land is part of a car park for the Wimbledon Theatre.
