Rialto Theatre

Opened as the Rialto Theatre on 31st October 1927, with Ramon Navarro in “Ben Hur”. In August 1928 it was taken over by Union Cinemas, and they were taken over by Associated British Cinemas(ABC) in October 1937. It was re-named ABC in the early-1960’s. It was closed on 18th May 1985 and has since been demolished. Prior to its closure there was some consideration about it being tripled, but that never happened.

An office block was built on the site, which contained space for two cinemas, but they were never opened.

The Rialto opened on 31st October 1927 and was designed by Robert Cromie. It was independently operated until Union took over the theatre in 1928 and subsequently it became part of the ABC circuit. It had around 1,262 seats and was never sub-divided. Renamed ABC in 1960, it was replaced by offices with two cinema spaces in the basement which were not fitted out and the theatres never opened.
