The Hempstead Road Drive-In opened on September 15, 1950. The premier feature was “My Friend Irma Goes West” with Marie Wilson and John Lund. The Hempstead Road Drive-In was an Ezell Theatre, billed as ‘open all year - rain or clear’, and ‘Absolutely the Last Word!’ The Hempstead advertised ‘a playground for the kiddies, a speaker for every car, in-car bottle warmers, and the world’s finest snack bar’. The Hempstead also advertised an automatic electric speaker indicator at the head of each ramp. Green lights would indicate speaker vacancies on that ramp. Admission for adults was 50¢, children for 9¢.
On July 17, 1964, the Hempstead’s screen was severely damaged by fire after a lightning bolt struck it during a thunderstorm. Repairs were carried out and the theatre finally closed in 1971.
