Originally built as a horse stable. The State Theatre was opened by Roy Smith in 1927. In 1936 it was renamed Tomah Theatre. It was operated by S&M Theatres which later became the Marcus Theatre chain. They later opened the Erwin Theatre which was directly across the street from the Tomah Theatre.
The Tomah Theatre was closed in 1955. The building was still standing with the front of the building retrofitted for other purposes until it was demolished in January 2017.

The Tomah (Tee Pee Supper Club) is located some distance away (several blocks) from the site of the Irwin on Superior Ave.
Per Jim Weinzatl‎: In 1927 Roy Smith started the State Theatre at 812 Superior which ran until 1936 when it became once again the Tomah Theatre, it ran until 1955. The building was originally a horse stable.
