The Delmar Theatre opened on April 15, 1910 with a stock-musical company policy. Within a few years it became a motion picture house. The architect was E. W. Pipe who designed the theatre in a Spanish/Oriental style.
The theatre was located at 4938 Delmar Avenue and initially seated 1,000 with all seats on a single floor. An Airdome opened next door for the summer months and seated 1,380.
The theatre was renamed the Embassy Theatre in 1924 and in 1931 became the Uptown Theatre.
As a film house the theatre closed on February 5, 1952 with Marie Windsor in “Outlaw Women” & Steve Forrest in “Geisha Girl”. It became a church with occasional live events, one of which was in 1954 when the theatre was used as the site of a jazz festival.
