Kings Hall Cinema

The Wellington Public House was built in 1905 on the north side of Shepherd’s Bush Green in the west London inner city district of Shepherd’s Bush. In 1908, the Electric Theatre was built next door to the Wellington, and had a seating capacity for 410. It was re-built and re-opened as the Kings Hall Electric Theatre in 1910 with a seating capacity of 979. It was operated by the United Electric Theatres Ltd. chain.

Closed in 1921, it became a dance hall in 1923. It was later converted into a Woolworth’s store, and by the mid-1990’s was a Superdrug store, which still operates in 2009. Next door, the former Wellington Pub, is now a branch of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

I worked near the green in the mid 1980’s, and used to shop in the Woolworth’s store on an almost daily basis. I never realised it could EVER have once been a cinema.
