Galaxy Cinema

The £4 million Shepherd’s Bush Centre was built as a new single storey shopping centre in 1970/71 and is located on the south side of Shepherd’s Bush Green in the west London inner city district of Shepherd’s Bush.

Included in the plans were a new single screen cinema named Galaxy Cinema, which was operated by impresarios Lew & Leslie Grade. This was to be the first of a chain of ‘family orientated’ Galaxy Cinemas, with others announced to open at Dunstable, Poole, Newmarket and Peterlee. Only the Shepherds Bush Galaxy Cinema opened, the others were dropped.

The Galaxy Cinema opened on 26th November 1971 with John Alderton in "Please Sir". All seating was on a single floor and seats were priced at 50p each.

The Galaxy Cinema was closed on 19th June 1975 with Linda Blair in "The Exocist". The cinema was converted into a retail unit, merging into the shopping centre. It became a Morrisons supermarket and by 2021 it was a Lidl supermarket.

In recent years, the Shepherd’s Bush Centre (now known as the West 12 Shopping and Leisure Centre) has been expanded to include a second level of shops and now includes a Vue multiplex cinema, which opened as a Warner Village 12-screen cinema on 7th December 2001.

Does anyone know exactly WHERE this was in the precinct? I used to work round the corner, and it would be great to know.

Keith;
It’s nearly 40 years ago, but I seem to remember seeing the Galaxy Cinema, located on street level. It was on the right hand side as you entered the shopping centre. I only saw it once, as I was attending a nightclub also located in the shopping centre, which at that time was running ‘gay’ nights. I can’t remember the name of the nightclub though.

At the beginning of the Steptoe and Son episode, The Seven Steptorai, Albert is seen coming out of a cinema with a Bruce Lee film on the marquee. The Galaxy Cinema sign and the number 117 can be clearly seen in several frames.

I did see a film at this cinema, it was at street level and part of the site is I think now a Morrison supermarket. If you walked into the center from Shepherds Bush Green you walked straight on until you came to a right turn, (which would lead you past some shops and another enrance/exit to the centre. As you walked along this path you past the cinema on your left. John

The Morrisons supermarket has now also gone and a Lidl supermarket fills the old cinema space
