Gem Theatre

This was a typical, small-town theater that served this rural, Iowa community for many years. Opened in the 1920’s with a seating capacity for 200, the theater finally closed about 1963.

It had been open both weekdays and weekends for many years, showing two different features each week. The theater had a balcony, which made it more distinctive among small-town theatres. There was a large neon sign that said "Gem" over the two entry doors. Between the doors were two large glass cases where current and coming movie posters were displayed. There was no large marquee.

According to the local librarian, this building is no longer standing.

Correction – went through town and found it standing, though significantly altered. The parapet features a key stone with letter “M” in relief.
