Is this theater still standing and waiting to be restored?
Seems like alot of small towns have a “REX” or “PAL” theatre. Patsy,Good story on Mrs.PEGGY at the Belmont Drive-in site on {CT}.
A Rex Theatre was operating in Corry as early as 1919. I’ve also found a house called the Family Theatre which opened in December, 1913; a 526-seat house called the Lyric Theatre opened in 1914 and mentioned again in 1916; a Grand Theatre in operation in 1919; and an Amuse-U Theatre in operation in 1915 and 1926. The 1913-1914 Cahn guide lists a 731-seat, ground-floor house at Corry called the Library Theatre. The town appears to have had a fairly busy theatrical history, but the Rex is the only indoor house we have listed as yet.
Closed in December 1976.
Joe - The Library was a smaller theater located where the Rex is today. Did it ever show movies? It’s not listed in the 1914-15 AMPD.
Seth, the 1914-1915 Gus Hill directory says that the Library Theatre “Plays R. V. P.” meaning Road Shows, Vaudeville, and Pictures. They also had concerts, as I came across a listing of a matinee performance there by the John Philip Sousa band in 1913.
Thanks, I’ll add it.
By the way, the historic address appears to have been 31, but the numbers now jump from 29 to 37.
