Additional history credit Cecil Nash: “This Dixie (Star) Theater (D,Iberville), owned by Ramon Quave and managed by his daughter Madeline, was built in 1921 and used as both a dance hall and silent film theater with furniture arranged accordingly. The Dixie was for silent films. When talkies” arrived rows of seats were installed. Henry Myers, then C.F.Gollott leased it as the Star Theater until the town began moving northward in the 1960s. It was the only movie theater north of the bay."
The Star Theatre was opened on January 14, 1947 as a second run house. The Star Theatre had been a onetime dance hall and silent movie house before it was remodeled as a movie theatre by the Meyer brothers of Biloxi and had 400 seats, according to a newspaper article announcing its opening. The Meyer brothers also operated the Meyer, Avenue and Harlem Theatres in Biloxi.
The star Theater was next to Miss Madalyn’s drygoods store, just about where this FEMA trailer is in street view. The theater sat no where near 500, probably closer to 50, maybe even 100. The building was destroyed in Camile (1969) but the theater had been out of business for years before that. I’m thinking around ‘53.
The Star Theatre was located at 221 Central Avenue and seated 500.
