Opened as the New Pickwick Theatre in late September 1908, it was designed by Philadelphia architect Franz C. Koenig. The facade was topped by a giant face in a sunburst and illuminated by 800 incandescent lights. A large window allowed passersby to look into the projection booth.
The New Pickwick Theatre was sold at auction in October 1917 and was remodeled to the designs of Oliver B. Wight in 1920, when a new brick and terra-cotta facade was added. In March 1924 it was renamed Howard Theatre.
The Howard Theatre closed in 1985 and was converted into a Dunkin' Donuts branch, but by 2004, this had closed and the building was boarded up and unused.

The Howard was last used as an athletic-wear store, the insignia of which still remains.
As of October 2010, the building is still there, with the gate closed, vacant.
Just added a 1975 photo.
The Howard was downtown’s “neighborhood” theater, in my day, showing films that had already had their first run in the months or years before. I saw many films at The Howard in the 50s and 60s.
