Carver Playhouse

The Diane Theatre a remodel of an existing building by architect David Harrison in December 1933, but it didn’t open until April 18, 1934.

Barry Goldman took over the theatre and it reopened as the Carver Playhouse on July 4, 1953 with Frederick March in “Man on a Tightrope”. It operated as an African-American art theatre and had elaborate decorations. The marquee was removed in around 1971. The building was demolished in the 1990’s.

Known in the 1970s as the “New Carver” and run in its latter days by the same people who operated the Uptown. It ended its life as a weekends-only dollar house playing blaxploitation and kung-fu movies.
