The 250-seat American Theatre was opened in 1921, in a conversion of a former retail store. It catered for an African-American audience. In early-1924, a 1,000 seat Airdome was built at the rear of the American Theatre, and this too was for the use of African American patrons.
Later in 1924, the American Theatre was extended onto the site of the Airdome, with the seating capacity increased to 500, it reopened October 17, 1924. It was renamed Lincoln Number Two Theatre in 1925 (there was a Lincoln Theatre operating nearby at 934-936 Pennsylvania Avenue). The Lincoln Number Two Theatre was closed in 1929. The building was demolished in the mid-1960’s.
