Midway Drive-In

The Midway Drive-In was located at the intersection of Hillsborough Road at US 70, near the Interstate 85 change in western Durham County. It was opened June 5, 1948 with Robert Lowery in “God’s Country”. It was operated by R.C. Saunders.

This was a drive-in theatre that catered to a variety of films, including second run movies and adult material during the late-1960’s through the late-1980’s, when the Midway Drive-In closed its doors and was demolished.

A storage facility has been built on the same premises where the Midway Drive-In once stood.

It showed a lot of “XXX” rated movies including its run of the 1973 adult classic “The Devil In Miss Jones” which ran at the Midway Drive-In for about 52 weeks!!

Well, in 1956 the MIDWAY wasn’t playing trash. It had a good standing as a theatre that booked movies the locals liked. Westerns are a big pull in that region. It parked 200 cars and in the late 50’s it was owned by J.N. Wallace.

Approx. address for this drive-in was 4260 Bennett Memorial Road. The entrance is now Couch Auto Shop. Part of the drive-in outline is barely visible but still there behind the shop. There was no entrance from U.S. 70. which would make sense given what was playing in its later years…
