Gnoll Hall Cinema

Originally built as the Gnoll Skating Rink in the early 1900’s, it closed in 1909.

It was converted into a cinema, known as the Gnoll Hall in 1912. In 1923 it was closed briefly for re-furbishment and came under the ownership of the Swansea based chain of cinemas known as South Wales Cinemas Ltd. In March 1937 it was leased to the Union Cinemas chain and taken over by Associated British Cinemas (ABC) when they took control of Union in October 1937. The lease ran out in October 1939 and it reverted back into the control of South Wales Cinemas Ltd.

The Gnoll Hall Cinema was closed in the early-1960’s. It is now used as an auto repair shop.

The cinema wasn’t demolished as such it was converted into a car dealership. If one looked in the showroom and up at the ceiling one could see the old decor and mouldings from the cinema. It is now a tyre and exhaust place and they installed a low ceiling, but I believe the old one is still up there.

Also used by the Neath Amateur Operatic Society in the late-1940s and early-1950s. Show Boat and The Lisbon Story were two notable productions.

Listed in the Kine Year Book for 1959 but is not in the directory for 1961. One source states it was demolished although I suspect this refers to just the frontage. Still Kwik Fit centre in November 2017.
