Plaza Theater

The Plaza Theatre was the only cinema in Derry, N.H. It was located on Broadway our main street in town. There was no balcony as I recall, showing first run when they had been on the circuit for a while.

Sometime in the late-1970’s it began to run porn, attracting quite a crowd from out of state. Maybe those blue laws in Boston caused an exodus to N.H. The building may have started as a livery stable before being converted to a cinema perhaps pre-1940.

According to the CinemaData project listing, Broadway Theatre was the original name, then Plaza Theatre. It was constructed from a portion of the old Pillsbury Shoe Company complex. It hosted live touring shows at first, as well as movies. There was a dance hall upstairs, and bowling alleys in the basement. X-rated films were a huge success here, with lines out front at the ticket window.
