Rio Theatre

The Liberty Theatre was opened in 1931. It was renamed Rio Theatre on November 17, 1932. It was operated by Paramount Pictures Inc. through their subsidiary Hoblitzelle & O-Donnell. It was still open in 1951, but was closed in 1952.

Not great, but for a ten-cent admission, it was an OK place

The address now is 118 Central Avenue SW. It’s a Sushi King restaurant. There’s no picture of the building on the King’s website, so I don’t know if the theater is being reused.

Oklahoma Hisorical Society Archives presents this 1932 shot of the Rio Theatre. Just OK? It is great the way Spanish Adobe styling flowed gracefully to form Southwestern patterns. I love this one!

Motion Picture Herald, Oct. 11, 1952: “Albuquerque Exhibitors Inc. … have closed the Yucca, Chief and Rio, three small old theatres all of which have outlived their usefulness.”

On a visit to Albuquerque, the manager of the former Sunshine theatre maintained that the next door building which housed the Rio theatre has been demolished, and the current building on that site, which includes the Sushi King restaurant, is a new build. As can be seen from my photograph, this certainly appears to be the case.
