Strand Theatre

One of the many downtown Duluth cinemas which ended it’s days as a porn house. The 507-seat Orpheum Strand Theatre was opened on September 20, 1915 with Francis X Bushman in “Graustark”. It was soon renamed Strand Theatre. It was closed in 1955.

It was reopened on July 30, 1971 screening “Sinderella and the Golden Bra” an adult movie. A second screen was added on June 30, 1978 when Screen 1 had “7 into Snowy” & “Executive Secretary” and on Screen 2 “Desires Within Young Girls” & “Visions”. The Strand Theatre was closed in 1986.

This web page about Duluth’s smaller theaters says that the Strand’s building was built in 1906 as a meat market, but had been converted to a movie theater by 1915. The house closed in 1951, then reopened as an adult theater twenty years later. The Strand closed for the last time in 1986, and the building remained vacant until it was demolished in 1998.

The final final close-up of the photo on this web page from the Duluth News Tribune archives shows the Strand’s sign and small attraction board. The movie advertised, The Other Tomorrow, was released in 1930.

The Orpheum Strand, which originally opened on September 20th, 1915, was soon renamed the Strand. This theater first closed its doors in 1955, only to reopen on July 30th, 1971, as a venue for adult films until its final closure in 1986.
