Cinema Centro

I remember this theater being close to the Santa Rosa Shopping Center in Bayamon. It was opened zas a twin screen theatre on November 9, 1972 with “Our Latin Thing” & Clint Eastwood in “Joe Kidd”. It closed sometime in the mid-to late 1990’s. It was managed by Wometco/Cinevista.

I remember they along with the Plaza’s and UA Cinema 150 use to play the best movies (Blockbusters) that would come to Puerto Rico. Im surprise to hear they have closed but are they demolished? And does anyone know why they closed?

The theater closed around 1997 or 1998 because there were building the nearby Plaza Del Sol theaters. Attendance had diminished throughout the 1990’s because it was a bit of a bad area, the theater was near a bad housing project (forgot the name) and it drove people to the Rio Hondo theaters instead. The site is now a two-story Walgreens pharmacy.

Did it have a Streamline Moderne Design?

It might be the gray building.

When you pass by Santa Rosa Shopping Center, you’ll see it sandwiched between two blocks. I haven’t been in the area in years. It has(d) a Baskin Robbins downstairs and I believe a Subway also.

Eric: You might be referring to the Virgilio Davila housing project on Highway 2, a short driving distance from the site.

I remember Cinema Centro very well as that was the theater where I saw “Star Wars” when it premiered. It was a large, comfortable venue, with one screen at the time.

I also saw “101 Dalmatians” (1972 re-release) and “Dragonslayer” there. At one time, there was a Pizza Inn on the first floor.

It was demolished to make way for Walgreens. :‘0

Total waste cause nobody has a photo of this theater.
