The Illinois Theatre in Newman, Illinois is at 110 W. Yates Street. Check out the Facebook page Newman, Illinois – Past and Present for old photos of the city and the theater. This FB page is run by the woman who runs Ocean to Ocean Antiques (next to the theater).

The building was constructed sometime between 1898 and 1909. Not sure when the theater opened, but it had definitely closed by the early ‘70s, when the Illinois historical survey photos show the marquee looking pretty shabby, and the letters missing.

A house called the Illinois Theatre is listed (alone) at Newman in the 1914-1915 American Motion Picture Directory. It listed neither address nor seating capacity, so I don’t know that it was this house.

Drove through Newman, Illinois this week for the first time since my 2014 visit (my photos from that visit are in Photos). At some point in the last 12 years the theater, along with the buildings on either side of it, were demolished. This area is now a vacant lot.
