Originally on this site, at the corner of Derby Lane and Stenson Road in the Cavendish/Normanton district of Derby, stood the Normanton Pavilion Theatre & Gardens which was built in 1908 seating 300. The Pavilion burnt down on 2nd January 1929.
The Cavendish Cinema was opened on 28th December 1937 with Grace Moore in “For You Alone”. It was built for an independent company and they employed local architects J. Browning & W.S. Hayes of Derby who designed a modern Art Deco styled cinema. Browning & Hayes also designed the Cavendish Cinema, Nottingham in 1938. Seating at the Cavendish Cinema, Derby was provided for 1,152 in the stalls and 512 in the balcony.
The Cavendish Cinema was taken over by Oscar Deutsch’s Odeon Theatres Ltd. chain from 30th August 1943, but retained its name and was never called ‘Odeon’. Odeon Theatres were later taken over by the Rank Organisation and they closed the Cavendish Cinema on 19th November 1960 with the film “Sons and Lovers” starring Trevor Howard.
It was demolished and a Fine Fare Supermarket was built on the site, which in 2011 operated as a Somerfield supermarket, and by 2015 was a B&M Bargain store.
