Normanton Cinema

Opened by United Electric Theatres Ltd. as the Normanton Picture Palace on 24th March 1913 with Edison’s production of “The Mystery of the Elk City Bank” as one of the attractions on offer. It was located on the corner of Dairy House Road and Princes Street in the south Derby suburb of Normanton.

Designed by architects Goldie and Peel, seating was arranged for 750 in the stalls and 150 in the circle. It had and imposing corner entrance and is said to have an ‘artistic scheme of decoration inside’.

During the mid-1930’s it had been re-named Art Picture Hall and for many years it played mainly second run MGM films. In 1954 it underwent a final change of name to Normanton Cinema, but this didn’t last too long. CinemaScope was installed in April 1956 but with dwindling audiences it was closed on 11th July 1959 with Trevor Howard in “Heart of the Matter”.

The local Derby Evening Telegraph newspaper reported that it had been sold to Joice’s Confectioners and was to become a bakery, but for some reason this fell through and ten pin bowling was proposed, again to no avail and in 1961 the cinema was demolished and a service station was erected on the site.
