Earl Theatre

The Earl Theatre was located in South Philadelphia and opened in 1923. A very nice place for a kid to go to watch “Frankenstein”, “Gunga Din”, and “The Wizard of Oz”. One of the many things we “South Philly” kids would do was one kid would pay, go in, hit the door and let our friends in for free.

The Earl Theatre was operated by Warner Bros. Circuit Management Corp. in the 1940’s. It was closed in 1962.

I dated a girl in the early 1980s that lived in this neighborhood, but I don’t recall seeing a movie theater. It may have been gone by then.
