Living in Denver Harbor after World War II and before TV, the only form of entertainment we had was the movies. We lived only a short walk from our house off Harbor Drive to the Globe Theatre on Lyons Avenue, somewhere between Harbor Drive and Majestic Avenue.
The Globe Theatre was a B movie house that showed mostly westerns like Roy Rogers and Gene Autry with a mix of Abbott and Costello, Tarzan, as well as all those wonderful serials like Superman, Batman, King of the Rocketmen and others. The theatre was run by a heavy set older lady that would grab you by the ear and throw you out if you misbehaved.
The building still stands today, or at least it did the last time I was there a few years ago. The building had become a tire shop of some sort and the revolving ball at the top of the marque was gone and replaced by an old tire. The inside was gutted with a lot of tires laying around. I have searched for a picture of the old theatre in it’s original glory but none are to be found.

It’s the Bob Bailey Studios Photographic Archive, ca. 1932-1998, a locally famous photographer of the time. If you write to them requesting permission to post, they are usually very accommodating once they understand it’s an educational site. A paralegal friend told me once that in Texas, permissions are not needed if it’s for educational purposes, but I haven’t looked up the law to confirm that.
I worked at the Globe in 1942-43 as the usher taking tickets. I was ten years old then and I’m near eighty now.

Taking a detour from an accident on I-10 I found myself on Lyons Ave. I saw this tire shop and recognized it from my youth. My mom worked at Jack’s Supermarket and every Sat. she’d bring us back to work with her after lunch so we could go to the Globe or Venus theater. I took a picture to show my sister; she’s 74 and I’m 71 now.
I am currently the owner of this building, and do love old movie houses, this neighborhood was once referred to as “Podunk”, and you can still see an original inscription “Podunk Palace” on the sidewalk in front of it.
