The Tryon Theatre opened on January 17, 1938 with Deanna Durbin in “3 Smart Girls”. It was the last movie theatre built in downtown Charlotte. It was a modest space both inside and out and showed second run movies its entire life which lasted until closing on December 20, 1958 with John Wayne in “Legend of the Lost” & Peter Cushing in “The Horror of Dracula”. It did have a nice marquee which was saved and moved to a new location.
Look for the restored marquee gracing the entrance to a restaurant in the Cavalaris building on Morehead Street in the Dilworth neighborhood.

Pity Charlotte didn’t have enough sense to save some theatres,guess they were trying to play catch up with ATL, Hey, Atl saved a Couple of Theatres Downtown.
It didn’t just show 2nd run features. It also showed striptease flicks. Eww! Shame, shame.
This opened on January 17th, 1938.
The Tryon Theatre was closed on December 20, 1958 at end of lease with a fine bill consisting of two shorts – a color cartoon and the Three Stooges in “Outer Space Jitters” – and two features: “Legend of the Lost” and “Horror of Dracula.”
