Located in Elkins Park in Montgomery County suburbs immediately north of Philadelphia, the Yorktown Theatre was opened September 2, 1934. By 1941 it was operated by Warner Bros. Circuit Management Corp. In 1963 this was a Stanley Warner theater, apparently booked as an art house similar to the Lane Theatre in Philadelphia. At the end of the 1960’s it was still an art house but was under different ownership of the A.M. Ellis Theaters Co. chain and was booked day-and-date with the Bala Theatre in Bala-Cynwyd and the Castor Theatre in Philadelphia.

Sat. May 6, 1961. This theater was playing “BUTTERFIELD 8” with shows at 6-8-10pm. It was in a block ad with the Lansdowe, Sedgwick and the Terminal.

I worked as an usher here in 1964-65. It was an art house place then that showed almost entirely foreign films. I wore a double-breasted uniform and showed patrons to their seats with my flashlight.

I remember seeing “Hester Street” and “The Way We Were” here. It also played X rated fare.
