Columbia Classics Cinema was on the ground floor of a commercial building near the harbour in the Wan Chai North neighbourhood of Hong Kong Island. The cinema opened on 1st September 1985 and its first film was Woody Allen’s “The Purple Rose of Cairo”. In 1980’s, it was one of the few cinemas in Hong Kong showing artistic or high-brow commercial films. Before its closure on 1st July, 1997, the cinema showed mainly commercial films and its last film was “Tiananmen”.
The auditorium of the cinema was long and narrow, without a proscenium and the screen was naked. Its lobby was so small that the patrons had to wait on the pavement.

I remember Columbia Classic was one of the few had student discounted tickets for the 12:30 shows. We used to get down there from the University after the morning lectures and watched a movie. It was around 18-20 HKD at the time, which was around 3 USD or 2 GBP. Very good value.

Columbia Classic was on the ground floor of the Great Eagle Centre alongside Fleming Road. It’s now a sushi bar and a Starbucks.
